Did you know...? The phrase "Get set, go!" is well-known in English-speaking countries. It is often used to start a race and means to get ready, focus, and take action. It is usually heard when children are about to race, acting as a countdown that tells them to get into position and prepare.
There are different versions of this phrase, such as "ready, get set, go" or even "ready, set, go." But the meaning is always the same: you need to prepare before you can take action.
I think that the phrase nicely captures my approach to teaching English too where underpinning knowledge leads to effective communication.
Preparedness and Knowledge
In language learning, "get set" is about more than just getting ready. It’s about building a strong foundation of knowledge and skills.
When you explore how English works, you understand it better. This understanding makes you feel more confident and helps you use the language naturally and in different situations.
Key Teaching Principles of Get Set Go English
Five key principles form my teaching approach. Here they are:
Exploration of English: Understanding how English works allows for more confident, effective, and natural use.
Guidelines, Not Rules: Language is full of exceptions; therefore, guidelines help navigate its complexities.
Learning in Chunks: Using groups of words, or chunks, makes language easier to remember, sounds more natural, and offers greater flexibility.
Connection of Pronunciation and Listening: Good pronunciation and listening skills are interconnected. 'The English Sound System' is integral to learning.
Practice is Essential: The key to fluency is practice.
These principles create a solid path for learning English, making it easier for students to build confidence and achieve fluency step by step. Then, after 'get set', comes 'go'.
Grading Scheme: A Reflection of the Journey
On a Get Set Go English course, the "get set, go" idea is also reflected in the grading system. The levels range from Beginner to Proficient, and each level is divided into five stages. 'Ready' means you are just starting at a level, this is followed by 'set', where you have built a good understanding. 'Go' means you are using your skills at this level. After that, come 'run' and 'fly', which show you are making strong progress and are almost ready to move to the next level.
Are you ready?
“Get Set Go” is all about helping you move forward in your English journey, step by step. With each stage—whether you’re just getting started or flying towards the next level—you’re building the skills and confidence you need.
